Check out the menus of some of the best Bahamas restaurants and you will find that Bahamas food is a wonderful fusion of African and Caribbean dishes. You will also find that these dishes have traces of American and European cuisine. Their main ingredients are mostly seafood and locally grown crops. The Bahamian taste buds greatly favor spicy foods. If you’re not into spicy foods, it’s best to first ask if the food is spicy or not. Feel free to ask the chef not to make your food spicy.



Conch (pronounced as “konk”) is a favorite Bahamas food that you’ll find served in many Bahamas restaurants. Conch is a mollusk whose meat is white and firm. It is served in a variety of ways. It can be eaten raw with some lime juice and spices. It can also be cooked in many different ways. Conch fritters, conch salads, conch stews, conch chowders, conch burgers… the list can go on and on. Conch is the national dish of the Bahamians. They celebrate their Annual Conch festival every October where you get to sample Conch dishes for free.

Fish is also highly prominent in Bahamas dishes. Fish chowder, often made with grouper, includes tomatoes, onions, celery, dark rum, and lime juice. Fish n grits is another favorite Bahamas food. Aside from fish, the dish also includes salted pork, green peppers, and onions.

On most days, Crab-and-Rice is found on the tables of Bahamas residents. Land crabs are abundant in the Bahamas. This dish is often cooked with thyme, tomato paste, onions, celery, green peppers, and pigeon peas. A typical meal in the Bahamas includes crab and rice with steamed fish, baked mac n cheese, and potato salad.

Crawfish, also known as rock lobsters, is a highly-prized seafood in the Bahamas. You will surely find them on the menus of Bahamas restaurants.  Among the most popular crawfish recipes are broiled crawfish, minced crawfish, crawfish salad and crawfish curry.

Johnny cake is another specialty in the Bahamas which originated from the early settlers. The “cake” is actually pan-cooked bread made of flour, milk, sugar, butter, salt, and baking powder. It is often served as a side dish, supplementing a main meal of fish and rice.

The Bahamas may be famous for its unspoiled natural wonders but Bahamas food will certainly be the icing on your vacation.
