History of Hope Town Bahamas

The Charm of Hope Town Bahamas

Like many of the islands in the Bahamas, Hope Town was initially a haven for wreckers and pirates during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It wasn’t until 1785 though that a permanent settlement was founded by British Loyalists from America which included a widow from South Carolina, Wyannie Malone, and her four children. The settlers’ sources of income were fishing, farming, and salvaging wrecks. In 1863, the British Imperial Lighthouse Service constructed a lighthouse which eliminated wrecking as a major source of income for the locals. Exporting products became a new source of income though it didn’t last. Today, tourism is the driving force of the island’s economy. In fact, this quaint little village is one of the reasons why Abaco Bahamas is a popular destination and considered the sailing capital of the world.
