The History of Paradise Island
Though Paradise Island is an extremely popular destination today, it was a sparsely populated and largely undeveloped piece of island back in the day. Formerly called Hog Island, it used to be the private property of Axel Wenner-Gren, an extremely wealthy Swedish businessman. It was purchased by Huntington Hartford, an American billionaire businessman, in 1959 who renamed it to Paradise Island. The first resort ever to have been opened on the island is the One & Only Ocean Club Bahamas which is still famous to this day. Development of the island continued over the years with the legalization of gambling and the construction of large-scale resorts as well as the two bridges connecting Paradise Island Bahamas to New Providence. Ownership of the island changed as well from Donald Trump to Merv Griffin to Sol Kerzner, who still remains the owner today.
