The History of Freeport, Grand Bahama Island

Freeport Bahamas, the capital of Grand Bahama Island, has grown to be a popular destination in the Caribbean. While the island has a long and rich history, the history of this city only goes as far back to the mid-twentieth century. Way back when Grand Bahama was still a developing island, it was known as a land of smuggled goods especially during the American prohibition. This eventually boosted tourism on the island which caught the attention of Wallace Groves, an American financier. Groves saw the potential of Grand Bahama Island and extended his intent to develop the island to the Bahamian government. With the assistance of British investor Sir Charles Hayward, Groves eventually came to terms with the Bahamian government and the Hawksbill Creek Agreement was constituted. This agreement is the inception of what we know now as Freeport Bahamas.
