The Ocean Club, Bahamas, one of the properties under the world-renowned One & Only group of luxury resorts, is perhaps most recognizable because of its appearance in the James Bond installment, Casino Royale. While this may be reason enough for many to visit the hotel, it is also worth noting that this gem, situated in prime Bahamas real estate (Paradise Island), has earned its reputation for elegance and luxury way before the cameras started rolling. Once owned by the A&P heir Huntington Hartford II, it is home to several palatial accommodations which complement the natural beauty of the pristine beach.
History of One&Only Ocean Club Bahamas
The Ocean Club, Bahamas is, in fact, half a century old, and has maintained a stellar reputation for service and amenities since it opened its doors. Its beginnings can be traced back to 1939 when Axel Wenner-Gren, a Swedish industrialist, became enamored of the unspoiled beauty of Paradise Island, then known as Hog Island. On it, he built a magnificent estate full of Chateau de Versailles-inspired gardens. After decades of enjoying his own private paradise, he sold it to Huntington Hartford II in 1962. With a vision of creating an exclusive resort on the island, he asked the Bahamian government to change the name of the island to Paradise and built Ocean Club. The grand opening was attended by dukes, ambassadors, and celebrities. In 1994, this legendary resort was sold to Kerzner International. In 2002, it was renamed One&Only Ocean Club.
